My suggestion is to board up all the windows and doors, buy food for a few days (before boarding up the doors, of course) and hunker down for a while. DO NOT GO OUT AND DO NOT LEAVE ANY WINDOWS OPEN!!! That's it, I guess.

I've been through 2 lvl 3 hurricanes, and 1 lvl 1 hurricane. For a MAJOR one, we took steel boards and put them over the windows & doors, and got food for about 2-3 weeks (always get extra just in case) and hunker down. Try to stay away from windows and doors, and make sure to always have a lot of candles, flashlights, batteries for the flashlights, and lighters for light. Good luck!

Also, if possible, buy a radio to listen for evacuations or other news about the storm. It also helps pass time to have your favorite music on so you don't start :sleep:ing at all hours of the day.

I've never been in a hurricane (probably because I live in the Central area) but my best guess is to keep your doors and windows locked. Also, try BEST AS POSSIBLE to hide in a room without windows. For me if I would ever be in a hurricane (which would be a miracle) I would hide in the Basement underneeth the stairs as that has no windows. Also, Stay away from mirrors or showers that could go on top of you. And, like Fangs said, buy a radio so you can hear news updates. Bring your mp3 to listen to music and also BRING YOUR PHONE incase of emergancies. Again, I'm not an expert. Just stuff from school drills. XD!

Phones won't work since the cell towers will be down...
Basements are OK, but it's better to be farther underground than that in the thick of it. Like on the bottom floor of a huge underground parking lot.

They all sort of disappear before getting to New York, but Irene is one of the exceptions.
